I am a traditionalist, in that I believe to better promote the conceptual aspects of image-making, one must first get a solid grasp on the technical aspects of image-making. The ability to transcribe three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane is an important skill to hone. I open each semester by establishing good drawing posture and stressing the acute observational mindset conducive to communication between hand and eye. Emphasis upon gesture drawing, visual measurement, design elements, compositional diagnostics and continuing practice all follow.
